Gainsight or RETAIN? It depends on whether you have a CS Ops team
Quick answer: Gainsight is the most complete enterprise customer success platform, and the right choice for large CS organisations with dedicated operations headcount. RETAIN is built for the other end of the market: CX teams of one to five people at UK B2B SaaS companies, with published pricing from £149/month, deployment in days, and a client-facing QBR portal included — a surface Gainsight does not offer.
What Gainsight does well
Gainsight has the deepest feature set in the category: mature journey orchestration, product analytics, customer communities, a learning platform (Skilljar, acquired 2025), and an aggressive agentic AI roadmap — Atlas agents and Staircase conversation intelligence, now extending into AI-delivered services. For an enterprise CS organisation with the budget and the operations team to run it, it is the reference platform.
Where the fit breaks for small teams
Gainsight assumes an operating model most UK mid-market SaaS companies don't have. Third-party implementation guides report 8–12 week baseline deployments (longer with complex Salesforce estates) and a widely-reported need for a dedicated Gainsight administrator in year one. If your CS team is one to five people with no CS Ops function, the tool needs a team you'd have to hire.
There is also no client-facing QBR portal: success plans can be shared outbound, but there is no surface your customer logs into to see their review live. QBR preparation remains internal dashboards plus exported decks.

RETAIN — published pricing
- Starter£149/month
- Growth£399/month
- Scale£999/month
Public on the pricing page. No sales call required to see a number.
The arithmetic is stark: RETAIN's top tier (£999/month) costs less per year than Gainsight's entry price. That's not a discount strategy — it's a structurally different product, built for teams the enterprise platforms aren't priced to serve.
What's included, and what's a second contract
Customer education is a useful example. Gainsight sells it as a separate, quote-priced product — Gainsight Customer Education, formerly Northpass — with custom pricing and no public price list (Gainsight public pricing pages, as of July 2026). It is a capable learning platform; it is also a second contract on top of the core platform.
RETAIN includes customer education — courses, learning paths and certifications — from the Growth plan at a published £399/month, and every RETAIN tier ships with the service desk, NPS & CSAT surveys and knowledge base included.
Which to choose
Choose Gainsight if you're an enterprise CS organisation with dedicated CS Ops, complex orchestration needs, and six-figure tooling budget. Choose RETAIN if you're a lean CX team that needs QBR automation, a client portal and explainable health scoring working this month, without hiring an admin to run the tool.
